Not all training sessions go according to plan
Today’s training session was the usual Sunday long run. Leading up to today, I’ve had a consistent stretch of running:
- daily runs of at least 25 minutes for the past 3 weeks;
- at least 20 miles run for 11 of the past 12 weeks;
- at least 9 miles run 10 of the past 11 Sundays.
I don’t say this to boast—plenty of folks have run more than I have over similar time periods—but it does mean I woke up this morning thinking my run would be “business as usual.”
Such was not the case though. I started easy enough, but around the halfway point, I started feel nauseated and needed to go to the bathroom. I slowed down and revised my goal for the day: just finish.
And that I did. I managed to ride the struggle bus all the way home. I slowed the pace and remained determined to put one foot in front of the other. It was a struggle. But that’s ok.
Most of my runs of late have been enjoyable and relatively stress-free; today was not. No reason to get frustrated though. Since my issues were GI, I might be able to chalk this one up to some poor food and fluid choices I made yesterday and this morning.
Beyond that, my main job is to rest up and get back out there tomorrow.
