Embracing a long weekend with the family

We did some frantic packing last night and drove to the shore after dinner last night. I was able to wake up to a beautiful sunrise on a calm cold morning at the beach.

Earlier in the week, my family made plans to take the day off from work and school today (Friday) for a long weekend. To accommodate the trip, I shuffled things around in my training plan for the week. I moved a Friday swim to Wednesday (no pool at the beach and the ocean is too cold this time of year). I decided not to bring my bike to the beach so I’m doing an easy short run in place of Saturday’s scheduled long ride. It’s a bit to windy and cold out here in January making a long bike this weekend likely a sketchy and miserable adventure.

I could be thinking, “isn’t triathlon supposed to be hard? Swimming in the January ocean and riding in the frigid cold would build character!” To that I’d say, Yes!

But to do so I’d probably have to overextend myself, possibly compromising a future workout or even several. This season for me is all about sustainable pace and balance. I’m staying consistent so far this month which means I’m not putting myself in a hole. Scaling back a bit this weekend to make sure I enjoy this special trip will help energize me. There will be other opportunities to push myself; just not this early in the year.
