50 days

Today I’m celebrating 50 days of running.

Since Dec 30, I’ve run at least 3 miles every morning. Some days I ran before the sun came up. Some days I ran in frigid cold weather. I’ve run on ice. I’ve run through mud. I’ve raced a 10K. I’ve covered 249.18 miles at an average of 4.9 miles a day and 35.6 miles per week. My longest run in this stretch is 10.5 miles.

Most of my runs have covered the same ground, either along the C&O Canal Towpath near Glen Echo, Maryland and in the hills of my neighborhood. I’ve racked up “Local Legend” status on four Strava segments in that time and am now within a few runs of taking over four more.

Most of my runs have been pretty slow—in my Zone 1 and Zone 2 effort range. Nothing spectacular.

I don’t feel particularly fast at the moment. When I finally allow myself some recovery, perhaps I’ll see some gains. But—I do feel strong. It’s getting easier to start and finish runs.

What I’m most proud of is the consistency. I’ve stuck with it despite the weather, despite occasionally feeling tired and stressed. And I’ve managed (knock on wood) to stay healthy so far.

Here’s looking ahead to 50 more. I’ll drink to that.
